MS Historical PE Ratio Notes

— Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) is a leading global investment bank & wealth management firm, serving corporations, governments, institutional clients, and individuals. The company operates through three main segments: Institutional Securities (including investment banking, sales & trading), Wealth Management (delivering financial advisory & investment solutions to individuals & families), and Investment Management. Morgan Stanley's revenues and earnings are sensitive to financial markets, deal activity, and broader economic cycles, which means the company's earnings can be more volatile than companies in non-financial industries. Historical Price/Earnings (PE) ratios for MS reflect both its earning power and investors' perceptions of risk and growth potential. During periods of strong economic growth or active capital markets, MS often posts higher earnings, sometimes leading to lower PE ratios if prices don't accelerate as quickly. Conversely, during recessions or financial stress, earnings can fall sharply, pushing PE ratios higher if the stock price doesn't adjust downward as quickly, or lower if investors worry about future profitability. When reviewing historical PE ratios for MS, it is important to consider the macroeconomic backdrop and market sentiment during each period, as these factors can significantly impact both actual and expected earnings.

How should the MS historical PE ratio be determined?
Realizing that PE stands for Price to Earnings ratio, we need two values to compute it: stock price and earnings per share. The stock price at any given date is a known historical value, but what about the earnings number to use?

✔️Accepted answer: There are a number of different approaches when it comes to calculating a historical PE ratio for a company like Morgan Stanley. We like to take our measurements on each of the past quarterly earnings reports. That only leaves the question of whether the earnings number at that quarterly report should be used on an annualized basis, or some other method. We approach this question using three different methods, on this MS Historical PE Ratio page.

What is the average historical PE for MS based on annualized quarterly earnings?
As we look back through earnings history, what is the resulting PE calculation if at each measurement period we use that quarter's earnings result annualized?

✔️Accepted answer: The MS historical PE ratio using the annualized quarterly earnings method works out to 13.6.

What is the average historical PE for MS based on trailing twelve month earnings?
As we look back through earnings history, what is the resulting PE calculation if at each measurement period we use the trailing twelve months combined earnings result in the calculation?

✔️Accepted answer: The MS historical PE ratio using the TTM earnings method works out to 13.7.

What is the average historical PE for MS based on median TTM earnings?
As we look back through earnings history, what is the resulting PE calculation if at each measurement period we use the median earnings over the trailing twelve months and annualize that median result in the calculation?

✔️Accepted answer: The MS historical PE ratio using the annualized median TTM earnings method works out to 10.96.

On this page we presented the MS Historical PE Ratio information for Morgan Stanley' stock. The average MS historical PE based on using the annualized quarterly earnings result at each measurement period (for the "E" in the PE calculation; and the closing price on earnings date as the "P") is 13.6. Meanwhile, using the trailing twelve month (TTM) quarterly earnings result as our method of calculation the "E" value at each measurement period, the average MS historical PE based on this TTM earnings result method is 13.7. Note: any PE calculations involving negative earnings were discarded as not meaningful.

Let's now compare this MS historical PE result, against the recent PE: when this page was posted on 4/16/2026, the most recent closing price for MS had been 187.32, and the most recent quarterly earnings result, annualized, was 13.72. Meanwhile, the most recent TTM earnings summed to 11.04. From these numbers, we calculate the recent MS PE on 4/16/2026 based on annualized quarterly EPS was 13.7. Based on MS's history, that recent PE is elevated relative to the historical average, with the recent PE 0.7% higher than the historical average PE across our data set for Morgan Stanley. Looking at the recent MS PE on 4/16/2026 based on TTM EPS, we calculate the ratio at 17.0. Based on MS's history, that recent PE is elevated relative to the historical average, with the recent PE 24.1% higher than the historical average PE across our Morgan Stanley data set with TTM EPS used in the calculation at each period.

Another interesting MS historical PE Ratio calculation we look at is to take the median earnings per share of the last four quarters for MS, and then annualize the resulting value... with that annualized number then being used in the PE calculation. To walk through this math for MS, we start with the past four EPS numbers and we first sort them from lowest to highest: 2.13, 2.68, 2.80, and 3.43. We then toss out the highest and lowest result, and then take the average of those two middle numbers — 2.68 and 2.80 — which gives us the median of 2.74. Basically the way to think about this 2.74 number is this: for the trailing four earnings reports, 2.74 marks the "middle ground" number where MS has reported a value higher than 2.74 half the time, and has reported a value lower than 2.74 half the time. Annualizing that median value then gets us to 10.96/share, which we use as the denominator in our next PE calculation. With 187.32 as the numerator (as of 4/16/2026), the calculation is then 187.32 / 10.96 = 17.1 as the MS PE ratio as of 4/16/2026, based on that annualized median value we calculated.

For self directed investors doing their due diligence on MS or any other given stock, valuation analysis for MS can greatly benefit from studying the past earnings and resulting PE calculations. This exercise can help inform an analysis as to whether the past earnings trajectory and current versus historical PE ratios justify the current stock value.
